It is clear
misogynists hate females as their equals and would prefer to see them caged and
submissive. These sociopaths have been actively and relentlessly, as
well as successfully working towards female
subjugation since the beginning of recorded history. Why must we make up all
this other nonsense regarding the will of God in his various forms?
The story
that evokes these angry thoughts involves one of these horrendous rape
situations out of Afghanistan. I am sure most of us have heard a tale or two
about what can happen to females who live in countries with a strong Taliban presence.
In this
particular instance a young woman named Gulnaz was tied up and sexually
assaulted by her cousin’s husband. The rape resulted in a pregnancy and
ultimately Gulnaz was found guilty of adultery and sent to prison. She gave
birth while incarcerated and now the two of them fester in an Afghan jail.
The solution?
Gulnaz has to marry her rapist
because marriage is the only way to restore family honor and prove her
innocence. If she does not agree to the marriage she will stay imprisoned for
the next 12 years. Say what?? It makes
no sense. This is Bizarro World justice.
It is ludicrous humanity allows these travesties to go on. How do the misogynists
keep a straight face? Maybe they hold in their celebratory glee for private
quarters:
“Can you believe we’re allowed to jail, torture, kill and detain
human beings solely on the basis of their gender AND we’re supported by the state as well as God himself in whatever guise we give him whether Jesus Christ, Allah, Jehovah, Yahweh,
Waheguru, Krishna, Embu or what have you?
Not only do
the misogynists have a myriad of disguises, but they are also stationed around
the globe. And we’re not only talking about places such as Afghanistan, India, Pakistan,
Somalia and the Congo, all of which are listed among the worst areas on Earth
for females to dwell. The misogynists and their message of hate are littered
all over the planet, including right here in North America.
Gulnaz’s
story is just one horrific story out of billions of horrific stories worldwide.
The female gender is harassed, sexually and physically assaulted, undermined,
ridiculed, demeaned, enslaved, and otherwise abused at all hours of the day in
all regions where humans preside. Her human rights are constantly violated and
her freedom of choice suspended, all of it based on one thing – her gender. Granted,
some of this cruelty is more subtle than the overt brutality found in Gulnaz’s
case, but the underlying message is all the same.
Misogynists
were surely behind the case of an American woman, Shawn Harris. She was
ordered to pay alimony to her ex-husband, even though he was convicted and
sentenced to 6 years in prison for beating, confining and sexually assaulting
her.
The
misogynists were also most certainly responsible for the shoddy Robert
Pickton investigation. For those who do not know, Pickton was the pig farmer
who hunted Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside for vulnerable females, often
prostitutes and drug addicts.
Once he
captured his prey he took them back to his farm, tortured them, cut them up
into little pieces and fed them to his pigs. It is speculated that Pickton was
allowed to proceed in this manner for some 20 years before he was caught, tried
and imprisoned in 2003.
The question
remains why it took so long to catch this monster, although recently a possible
answer has come to light via Constable Catherine Galliford. She came forward a
while back with allegations that the male officers involved in the Pickton investigation
were not only slacking on the job – partying, taking naps, wasting time – but
were also sexually harassing the female investigators, her in particular.
She claims that
at one point a male constable described a fantasy to his male counterparts,
right in front of Galliford, in which Pickton escaped from jail, kidnapped the
female officer, stripped her naked, strung her up from a meat hook and gutted
her like a pig. Then just in case this was not bad enough, these misogynists masquerading
as public servants “fist-tapped” each other over the sheer delight of their
sick “fantasy”.
Finally, it’s probably safe to conclude misogynists were associated with the acquittal
of a child molester and rapist by the Supreme Court of Canada. The reason for
the verdict? The stories of the 15 girls accusing this man were too similar and thus
must have been fabricated.
What curious
logic is that?
Is it so
far-fetched that the SAME criminal would follow the same patterns when committing
his atrocities multiple times on multiple victims? Of course it isn’t far-fetched,
but it does make perfect sense when viewed through a misogynistic lens.
The stories
go on and on. What I’ve described here is merely a single respiration in an ongoing
cycle of hate-tainted oxygen.
My original
thought was that misogynists should stop hiding behind religion, philosophy
and science. But I suppose it is naïve to think they would emerge from the
robes of God and expose themselves for what they are. It would be a tougher
sell, certainly for their unwitting female followers (which on the surface seems inexplicable that there would be female misogynists, but I've read this explained as the oppressed being assimilated into the value system of the oppressor), but also for decent, ethical men of wisdom, conscience and
integrity. It would appear God has been unfairly cast without his consent.
I started
writing this back in November, so I thought I should check to see if there have
been any changes to Gulnaz’s fate in the interim. What I discovered coaxed
tears from my eyes and Hallelujah from my lips. Gulnaz has been set free, possibly not a
westernized idea of freedom, but she at least has been pardoned by her country’s
President, Hamid Karzai, and let out of prison.
On a smaller note, how about the way women are viewed in the media? There are impossible standards that no normal woman could meet, and yet these are the role models for our daughters.
ReplyDeleteDon't even get me started on women in the workplace!
I know this doesn't have anything to do with religion, but I think gender inequality is rampant, and what's more, it's largely ignored. Great post, as always.
I actually think religion and gender discrimination have a lot to do with each other. :-)
DeleteI agree with you, however, that some workplaces are more unfriendly to the female plight than others, but things have definitely improved for women; although sexual harassment is an issue. One of our main hindrances continues to be the children. We refuse to abandon our babies. When society stops ridiculing this refusal to sacrifice our kids for notions of equality we'll be better off. Mothers should not be penalized for wanting to raise healthy, contributing members of society. Look what happens to kids when they are deserted - they grow up to be dysfunctional, screwed up adults (*okay, this is a gross generalization - some will still rise above the chaos no matter how abused and neglected they are growing up*). The messed up adults who don't find a productive way to channel their discontent end up wreaking havoc on the smooth functioning of any society.
Anyway, as always, your comments have inspired more of my rambling! Thanks for stopping by Janice :-)
Happy New Year, my blogging friend! I hope your year is wonderful!
ReplyDeleteRachel, it is OUTRAGEOUS to ask women to abandon their babies just so they can "work".
ReplyDeleteWhen will employers, business and society GROW UP? The horrific story of Gulnaz and Shawn Harris are unacceptable in this modern world! Misogynists must be put on notice: MISTREATMENT of women anywhere in the world is UNACCEPTABLE !! Our judicial system in it's attacking female victims themselves is inexcusable. Who are these judges and "officers of the law?" How can they continue to be so IGNORANT of the plight of women? We clearly need quantum change in the attitude of society towards the mistreatment of women.
Now I'll get off of my soap box...but that pathetic, inexcusable aspect of humanity enrages me --as a REAL man. REAL MEN do NOT abuse women. REAL men do NOT condone this sickening situation.
Rachel, thank you for writing about this difficult subject. I hope EVERYONE reads it! Happy New Year!
